Karakoram International University (KIU) (Urdu: قراقرم انٹرنیشنل یونیورسٹی) is a university in Gilgit, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It was established in 2002 with a charter from the Federal Government of Pakistan, with the goal of improving access to higher education for people in the area.[1]
There are two faculties - Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. A third faculty of Mountain Area Development Studies is still in the planning stage.
The campus, situated on University Road in Gilgit, is under construction. The core facilities are complete and around 2000 students were enrolled in 2007. A third of them were women.[1]
The KIU has been chartered as a multi-campus institution, however no other sites have yet been established. All the university's activities take place in Gilgit.
The KIU is the only public university in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan – bordering China, India and Afghanistan.
It was announced that Chinese lessons would be offered in order to increase trade ties with China.[2]
